Why You Need To Be Strong

Every physical interaction with our environment is a production of force. In a practical sense, strength is a factor in every single voluntary physical movement, and plays a bigger role in life than any other physical trait.

Your grandmother getting off the toilet is not a display of her aerobic capacity. It's probably not limited by her flexibility, since she was able to get down there in the first place. Power, muscular endurance, and all those other traits mean nothing when strength is not sufficient to complete the task. The best way to get granny off the toilet is to get her strong. If she can squat her bodyweight to depth, you can bet she'll be able to get up off the can. And if you can add weight to her squat, the easier it will be.

But what about you? You're still young and fit. You run sometimes. You know your way around the gym. You're probably strong, but you know you could be stronger, don't you? If you've been checked into the boards in hockey, or cleared out in a ruck on the rugby pitch, you know that you would have been harder to move if you were physically stronger.

Opening a tight jar lid. Moving furniture. Walking up the stairs. These are all displays of strength. You don't have to be a division 1 athlete to strength train. You may never need to deadlift 500 lbs, but getting strongER than you are now will improve your life in more ways than you know. Strength is inclusive. Everyone can start somewhere.

Appropriate strength training carries over into all other adaptations as well. Squatting, deadlifting and pressing improve flexibility for most people. Your muscular endurance will go up (who can do more pushups; a guy who can bench 100 lbs or 200 lbs?). Your muscles will get bigger. You will be able to control your body more easily when you're not carrying a loaded barbell. And yes, your aerobic capacity will improve too.

No other type of training offers the same benefits as strength training. Get a little bit stronger and see how you like it.
